Where the numbers come from
Android apps that include the Battery Ranking library contribute battery sessions: unbroken stretches of discharging or charging. Each phone model’s sessions add up to running totals of points and hours.
Three measures
- Screen on
- Points lost per hour, screen on, unplugged.
- Screen off
- Points lost per hour, screen off, unplugged.
- Charging
- Points gained per hour on the charger.
Pooled rates
Per model and measure: total points divided by total hours.
Today’s medians: 14.2 points an hour lost with the screen on, 2.57 with it off, 20.9 gained on the charger.
Enough evidence
| Each model needs | Screen on | Screen off | Charging |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sessions, at least | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| Observed time, in total | 2 hours | 8 hours | 15 minutes |
| Battery movement, in total | 10 points | 2 points | 10 points |
The ranking starts once at least 5 models qualify.
Percentiles
Per measure, a model’s percentile is the share of the other models it beats. Lower drain and faster charging rank higher. Ties share the middle.
The blend
Fixed weights: screen on 60%, screen off 25%, charging 15%.
The score
The score is the blend’s percentile among all ranked models, worked out as for each measure. Equal scores share a rank.
Samsung Galaxy A71: blend 50.02, score 50.1, rank 572 of 1,146.
Limits
- Not a lab test.
- A model’s figure, not your phone’s.
- Hours are estimates. Straight lines from pooled rates, so read “≈ 7 h 05 min” as “about”.
- Sessions aren’t people. One phone contributes many sessions.
- No error bars. Each phone page lists its session counts.
